Mumas Renaciendo: an organization that empowers Puerto Rican moms

Lillian Alvarado Viñas holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing and a Master's in Public Relations and Integrated Communication. She dedicated herself to Professional Development in public and private schools for many years. She describes herself as a passionate woman and mother; with the desire to contribute to the economic development of Puerto Rico, especially with the community of socially and economically disadvantaged women.

In 2017, after going through a difficult time in her life and being determined to find a new work direction, Lillian decided to create Mumas Renaciendo, a non-profit organization located in the town of Hatillo that has as its main focus the empowerment and transformation of women-mothers and their families, so that they become part of and actively contribute to the economy of the country. Mumas Renaciendo offers professional workshops and sewing training.

"At first, I had no idea how a non-profit organization worked, but I didn't give up and started knocking on doors. During the first few years, we received support from several companies and eventually, I was able to develop and offer my first residential program," recalled Lillian.

Currently, the organization's main project is Mumas, a social enterprise where you can find underwear made with eco-friendly materials. Each piece is made with 100% biodegradable hypoallergenic bamboo fabric.

"I don't know how to sew, but my mom studied design and sewing. Thanks to her, I grew up in the world of fabrics; I never imagined that at some point in my life, I would immerse myself in the world of design and sewing. It all started when I noticed that many professional women had to look for other alternatives to generate income. Many of them enrolled in sewing courses through the Internet. Unfortunately, these courses are not accessible to disadvantaged communities. That's how I decided we would offer a program related to sewing," explained Lillian.

In addition, the organization's founder mentioned the importance of creating and ensuring the sustainability of the cause. "I have worked in the social impact area, and I have seen many organizations that provide support to disadvantaged communities, but that support they receive is to solve immediate problems, such as food and clothing, without thinking about the long term. Those donations are important, but providing learning tools and training is necessary to make a lasting impact."

ConPRmetidos is supporting Mumas with a grant of $15,000 to help them continue working on the professional development of women so they can become economically independent.
